DID YOU KNOW… For a brief period during the War, Florida was an independent nation. On Jan. 11, 1861, the Ordinance of Secession was signed after approval by the Secession Convention in Tallahassee. It was an independent nation until joining the Confederate states on Jan. 28. The new flag included three stars to represent the three states that had seceded at that point - South Carolina, Mississippi and Florida.
